CHAPTER EIGHT

AS FAR AS first dates went, this was the most unusual one Bashir had been on, and for more reasons than how he’d come to find himself on the back of a motorbike, clinging to Yusra while she navigated her city’s traffic like a pro.

But he was also dating his wife.

Most of what they’d done so far had been out of order. Their family existed before their marriage, thanks to the baby swap ordeal. And they had barely known each other before agreeing to marry. Why did this have to be any different?

At least the honeymoon came after the marriage.

Honeymoon? When had he begun to see their holiday the way Yusra had, as a honeymoon rather than a simple vacation?

Bashir had obviously underestimated her influence on him. It likely wasn’t any help that they’d spent the last week together in close quarters. Recognizing that she was sensitive to him working late away from her and their sons and wanting her to remain happy with her decision of marrying him, he had set up a second office from their hotel suite. In a short time, Yusra’s satisfaction became as vital as Project Halcyone was to him. He told himself that he needed her cooperation for their convenient relationship, and though he knew that was partly true, it wasn’t the whole truth. But he was resisting exploring what that meant. It’d be a danger to court any emotion around her. Affection for Yusra was a thing he couldn’t risk. Because then he would grow to care for her, and that he wouldn’t chance for the entire world.

Squeezing his arms around her a little more, he concentrated on the sights zipping past them. He’d seen parts of Kampala already. But not like this. Not at the total mercy of Yusra when he’d chosen to climb on the bike behind her. She was in control, keeping them upright and alive, and that was something new to him. Considering he’d spent most of his life caring for himself, and in so doing using his wealth to build the kind of life and world he wanted to live in, Bashir understood that this was more than a ride for him. He trusted her with his well-being. And that was significant for him. It would be important to her too if she knew what he was thinking, but that would require him telling her, and he wasn’t inclined to do that. It would create a bond between them. The kind that wasn’t easily broken or given up. The sort that would develop into deeper feelings and manifest even stronger ties to her.

Would that be such a bad thing?

With a frustrated grunt, Bashir narrowed his eyes at their surroundings, blurring past sometimes, and slowing down when confronted with bumper-to-bumper traffic.

“Is something wrong?” Yusra asked with a glance over her shoulder at him.

She’d heard him. Just how loud had he grunted?

“Fine.” He gritted the word out as she gave a little wiggle of her rear. She was merely adjusting in her seat, but it dealt a catastrophic reaction in him.
